The film opens with Goku’s tragic death from a viral heart disease and the death of the Z Fighters at the hands of Android 17 and Android 18 six months later. However, the Z Fighters are unable to be brought back to life because the Dragon Balls are permanently unusable due to Piccolo’s death. The story moves thirteen years into the future where a thirteen year old Trunks and twenty three year old Gohan first appear, most other Z Fighters are dead in this time line. Gohan, who is now a Super Saiyan after witnessing the deaths of the other Z Fighters, attempts repeatedly to defeat the androids, but is out numbered and outclassed. Gohan brings himself to train the young Trunks, who comes very close himself to becoming a Super Saiyan as well. Knowing that it was an overflow of emotion that pushed every saiyan to the super saiyan level (Goku and Gohan from witnessing the death of loved ones, and Vegeta out of frustration of not being able to become a Super Saiyan), he attempted to strike emotional cords in Trunks, informing Trunks of the Androids’ lack of compassion for anything and everything. Trunks’ hair flashes blond for a second, only for Trunks to revert back to his form and collapse from exhaustion.
